The September Full Moon in Pisces: Four Ways to Leave the Past Behind

"The farther behind I leave the past, the closer I am to forging my own character." - Isabelle Eberhardt

astrology typewriter imageIt's a typical summer day here in Miami- tropical with scattered showers. As I sit and write this column I can look north-west and see the bright blue sky behind fluffy white clouds. Looking south-east I see nothing but gray and can hear the rumble of thunder. The weather here can be such a mixed bag. Astrologically, these next few weeks will be quite similar.

Last month I talked about leadership and encouraged you think about how to cultivate those qualities in your own life. This month will present us with a few challenges to help us practice what we learned (smile). Leadership implies a destination, moving from one state towards another. The biggest threat to effective leadership is clinging to the past and the inability to move forward. At this full moon the South Node (aka the past) is at 29 degrees of Cancer- the exact degree of the July solar eclipse. It will be easy to get bogged down in the past this month but I'd like to suggest four ways to leave it behind and keep moving forward.

1. Stay Goal Oriented. While the North Node (the future) in Capricorn asks that we stick to the plan, keep our committments, and exercise self-control, the Mars (action) Pluto (resources) opposition may leave us feeling as though we don't have what we need to reach our goals. And we may not. Pluto has been retrograde for months and finally turns direct on September 11th. Stay present and expect to gain some traction towards the end of the month.

2. Be Patient. The Mercury (thinking) Mars (action) square suggests we may feel backed into a corner and forced to make a quick decision. Or that arguing to get our way is the only option. Mercury will be retrograde from September 7 - 31 meaning we need to be more mindful and reconsider, review, and rehearse our words.

3. Be Innovative. The third of five Saturn (structure) Uranus (change) oppositions happens on September 15th and creates conditions whereby we can change the story, break with the past, and restructure our plans. To innovate mean to "renew or change." Leaders innovate to avoid stagnating.

4. Be Flexible. This month finds four planets in the mutable signs, suggesting we remain flexible in our plans. The more adaptable we are to changing circumstances the less likely we are to snap. Every good plan has a contingency (from the word "to touch" or what we reach for when things go awry) that keeps the momentum moving forward.

September is going to be a challenging month so don't get down on yourself if you don't accomplish as much as you had hoped. Like every good leader we'll need to take the good with the bad, keep our eyes on the prize, and make progress where we can. Namaste'

Astrology Basics: The Conjuction

The word conjunction means to join together. In astrology it describes a situation where two planets are close together in thedog-cat imagesky. For example, if the planet Venus is at 10 degrees of Taurus and Mercury is at 8 degrees of Taurus we can say that they are close together, and thus conjunct. The conjunction blends the energy of the two planets involved, much like two candles- when you move them closer together you can't distinguish which is producing the light- the energy is blended.

The conjunction is a type of aspect in astrology. Aspects are the angles the planets form with one another from their place within the wheel of the natal chart (360 degrees). If there are no degrees (or very few) between the planets, like Venus and Mercury in our example above, the aspect is a conjunction.

The effect of a conjunction is dependent on the planets involved. Since this aspect blends it can also amplify. For example, Jupiter conjunct the Sun could mean someone who has a big (Jupiter) sense of himself (Sun). That may come across as jovial, fun, and adventurous; or it could manifest as arrogant, self-aggrandizing, or hedonistic (these are two extremes of this combination- most likely the manifestation will be somewhere in the middle of these two).

The conjunction also brings the two planets (which can be thought of as our inner drives or needs) into cooperation. While one planet might conspire to be heard, when they team up they can become difficult to ignore, especially when it is a strong energy, like that of Mars or Pluto. Additionally there could be additional aspects or other planets influencing the conjunction itself, which would influence the overall expression of it as well.
